Just came back from a blogger’s (and non-bloggers) meet in Frankfurt which was good fun and brought some extra perspective into this whole “live your life online” thing. I.e. meeting new people for real is still a lot more rewarding than just reading their posts.

Speaking of which, here’s a nice one I was recommended via twitter by @Joanikin today. Pretty much hits the nail on its head. Enjoy!

PS: I felt I was suffering from blogger’s block. So this is the first step to overcome it. :-)

Is Google evil after all? – Switches off Ecocho.com [update]

Kategorie Unternehmen | TAGS , , , , ,

Today is Earth Day, and the company whose self-proclaimed motto is “Don’t be evil!” has done something at least inadequate today. Google stopped providing “eco search engine” Ecocho.com with their search technology, apparently claiming that the company violates AdSense terms and conditions.

As you can read in my previous post, Ecocho funds trees to be grown in Australia to offset carbon emissions and do some good to the atmosphere. Google breathe the same air as all of us, so switching off a service that helps saving that air on the grounds of contractual reasons is insensitive, to say the least.

According to the team at Ecocho, Google’s move came as a total surprise and they have been unable to reach people at Google to settle the issue so far. Yahoo! continues to provide their search to Ecocho, so users can still do their bit to help the climtae. Oh, and of course other bloggers and Twitterati have started talking about it already and the tendency is not in favour of Google! So watch this space.

Update: Ecocho has published an official statement here.

[Disclaimer: Ecocho.com is my client at Hotwire. However, the above is my personal view on the issue.]

Search to save the climate

Kategorie Unternehmen | TAGS , , , , , , , , , , ,

As we know, Australians suffer especially hard from the thin ozone layer. And despite the former government would go with the US president when it came to dealing with climate change, people in Oz have still developed a sense of urgency for the consequences of too much carbon-dioxide and other gases in the atmoshere. On the other hand, I don’t know of any web business model that made it big out of down-under.

Ecocho.com could chance that. They are launching today with the tag line “You search. We grow trees.” in many countries worldwide. The idea is so simple I wonder why I didn’t have it. The site basically is a custom search version of Google and Yahoo. The big ones provide the search technology and deliver the results. Now, the company promises to plant a tree or two for every 1,000 searches performed through their site and offset a ton of CO2 over the lifetime of that tree.

Of course, Ecocho doesn’t plant the trees themselves, they “adopt” them by bying carbon emission offset certificates from Australian authorieis, who, in return, plant the trees. The money for that comes from advertising. It’s now all altruistic though as 30% of the advertising money will stick with Ecocho, 70% will be invested in trees.

Considering the hundreds of millions of searches performed worldwide every day the potential for Ecocho is huge. And if that all works out with the tree adoption scheme it should have some impact on the climate for sure. And because even small contributions count, I’ve put the little search box in my lefthand sidebar. So if the valued reader should disappear from my blog right after reading this, I’ll be happy. He or she is saving the world after all – a least a little bit.

Suchen für’s Klima

Kategorie Unternehmen | TAGS , , , , , , , , , , ,

Kategorie Werkzeuge | TAGS , , , , , , , , ,

I’m amazed at the number of services and web2.0y things I’ve tried out in the past few weeks. New services just keep popping up like mushrooms it seems. No doubt, most of these will vanish again at some point or be bought to be integrated somewhere else. Here’s a list, without any specific order for you to check out, or not. Your choice.

  1. Aka-aki, a mobile social network based in Berlin, could actually become something big I believe
  2. Socialthing, an aggregator service, currently in closed beta (comment this if you want an invite, I have 2)
  3. Friendfeed, the more popular aggregator service for anything social media
  4. Bloglines, my favourite RSS reader. Still in Beta for V2.0, but works fine
  5. Twitter, the most talked about, most hyped of the past few months, useful, fun, boring, waste of time, depending on how you set it up
  6. Brands4Friends, a closed shopping community
  7. Seesmic, a video chat site, not really tried it out yet
  8. kyte.tv, fun to play with and stream pictures, audio, and even video live to your blog, from your mobile!
  9. meinVZ, the StudiVZ for grown-ups. They launched mid-March, promised to port my StudiVZ account, but didn’t since. Useless.
  10. Hobnox, a German video site, currently in restricted beta. They streamed the re:publica panels live.
  11. Be completely offline for a week in Lisbon – Worked!
